I've always found that the key to long distance relationships was making sure that both people are doing something new and exciting that they (hopefully) love to do. If one person leaves the other for college and is out meeting new people and having new adventures while the other is in their hometown with the same group of friends and family, the relationship will be hard pressed to survive. However, if both people are constantly engaged in new situations, regardless of whether they are similar situations, they will be content enough with their own lives to also be happy for their partner.
